Wesley Holliday – UC Berkeley
From Voting Theory to Electoral Reform
Philosophy Thought Leadership Speaker Series
Marin Philosophical Society – 2/16 – San Rafael
Wesley Holliday, Philosophy Professor at UC Berkeley, works in Logic and Social Choice Theory, which includes Voting Theory. His voting theory work focuses on voting rules, system design and their unintended consequences. Rather than advocating for party or ideology, he examines how electoral systems and structures can shape outcomes. His research explores how and why no voting method can satisfy every idea of fairness and how understanding these tradeoffs can help inform and develop both realistic and responsible electoral reform.
To connect theory with practice, Holliday has developed and made publicly available, StableVoting.org, an electoral voting platform for use in actual or simulated elections. This is a great example of theory in action.
Wesley Holliday earned his PhD in Philosophy at Stanford University.
