Patrick MacLeamy – August 17 - Marin Philosophical Society

How Can We Learn to Flourish Together?

Why do some companies, governments, institutions, and even societies consistently accomplish ambitious goals while others become trapped in confusion, conflict, dysfunction, and decline? For over forty years, Patrick MacLeamy devoted his career to answering this important question. As CEO of HOK, one of the world’s leading architectural and engineering firms, he helped guide thousands of complex projects involving architects, engineers, contractors, governments, and clients around the world. Later, he developed universal architectural software standards that transformed how major building projects worldwide are envisioned, planned, and delivered.

Might architecture serve as a metaphor to explore one of civilization's greatest achievements? Not the construction of buildings, but the human cooperation that makes flourishing possible. Might we ask what enables thousands of people, with different talents and responsibilities, to accomplish together what no individual can achieve alone?

Drawing upon experience, Patrick will reflect on how leadership, shared standards, incentives, accountability, trust, and institutions can transform complex ideas into accomplished reality.

Join us this month to explore one of philosophy's oldest, practical and pragmatic questions: How can human beings learn to flourish together?
