What is Invaluable about Higher Education?

Marin Philosophical Society – 6/15 – San Rafael

Member-Led Discussion Group

For the ancient Greek philosophers, the purpose of education was not merely to prepare people for work but to enrich their intellectual and emotional lives. This conviction led to the founding of the Academy and the Lyceum, institutions dedicated to the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing. Employable skills certainly had their place, however they were never the central focus. Education was intended first and foremost to help individuals become wiser, more thoughtful, and more humane.

Fast forward to the present, and employable skills often seem to be the dominant motivation for pursuing higher education. Public discussions increasingly focus on return-on-investment calculations, career outcomes, and workforce preparation. While these concerns are important, they raise a deep philosophical question: What is the value of those qualities of higher education that cannot be measured in economic terms?

At this month's meeting, George Hammond will explore the distinction between what is valuable and invaluable in higher education, and how that distinction relates to the very purpose of higher education and lifelong learning.

George Hammond has been Chairman of Humanities West at Commonwealth Club San Francisco for 20 years. He is the author of six philosophy books, four novels and one collection of short stories. Prior to retiring, he was a merger and acquisition attorney whose career included 200 deals. He was also a member of the board of the Pacific Stock Exchange for four years.
